London, Dec 14(ANI): Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has become the 56th BBC Sports Personality of the Year after edging out reigning Formula One champion Jenson Button, heptathlon world champion Jessica Ennis and Ashes-winning captain Andrew Strauss.
In a ceremony held at in Sheffield, Giggs, who this year won a record 11th Premier League winners’ medal, also became the only footballer to win the award since David Beckham in 2001.
The former Wales captain polled 29.4 per cent of the votes with 151,842, while Button came in second on 18.74 per cent with 96,770 votes.
A stunned Giggs said he was “in total shock” after winning the award.
“This is a shock. A big shock. If I wasn’t nervous enough, just seeing my heroes Seb Coe and Michael Johnson on stage is unbelievable,” The Sun quoted Giggs, as saying.”As a young kid, I grew up watching this programme. So, to see all those names on the trophy is special. I’ve played with some great players, with the greatest manager that has ever lived and for the greatest club, but this is up there,” he added.
Meanwhile, Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt was named Overseas Personality of the Year after winning World Championship gold in the 100m, 200m and 4×100m relay. The England men’s cricket team claimed the Team of the Year award having reclaimed the Ashes and recorded a series victory over the West Indies.
While, England football team manager Fabio Capello’s success in guiding the team to next summer’s World Cup in South Africa earned him the Coach of the Year award. (ANI)
