Mamma Mia! slammed for glorifying jumping from cliffsJuly 12th, 2008 - 2:12 pm ICT by ANI
London, July 12 (ANI): The makers of Mamma Mia! have come under fire for promoting dangerous sport tombstoning, i.e. jumping from cliffs, in the movie musical.
The stupid scene, which started the whole criticism, stars four characters leaping from a high cliff into the sea.
There has been a spate of tombstoning injuries and deaths in Britain and coastguards fear it will encourage more thrill-seekers to attempt it.
A 46-year-old father of six was killed last year doing it, The Sun quoted Fred Kaygill of the Maritime Coastguard Agency, as saying.
This summer we have seen two broken necks among a spate of serious injuries. Only this May, a 25-year-old became paralysed from the neck down after jumping 25ft into just three feet of water.
It is stupid to promote tombstoning and this film does nothing to help us make people realise how dangerous it is.
The scene does nothing for the story and should not be in there, Kaygill added. (ANI)
