New Delhi, Apr 22(ANI): Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga on Friday announced his retirement from Test cricket, saying that it would prolong his ODI and Twenty20 career.

Malinga said that his decision was based on the chronic knee injury that he sustained in February 2008.

The injury had prevented the right-arm-fast bowler from playing ODI cricket for 16 months.

“I have carefully considered my options and have decided that not playing Test cricket will help me achieve my goal of representing Sri Lanka in the 2012 World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup,” Malinga said in a statement.

“While representing Sri Lanka in as many ICC events as possible is my priority, I am fully available for selection for all Sri Lanka’s ODI and T20 matches. I plan to travel to Sri Lanka shortly to discuss my future plans with the selectors,” he added.

The 27-year-old has played 30 Tests since making his debut against Australia in 2004.

He has taken 101 wickets at an average of 33.15. (ANI)
