Melbourne, Aug 31 (ANI): Cricket agent Mazhar Majeed, who was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers, has links to seven players of the Pakistani team.

Mazhar and his brother Azhar Majeed are recognised figures on the international and domestic cricket circuit, and claim to act as agents for seven players, including captain Salman Butt and the bowlers accused of deliberately bowling no-balls, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif, The Age reports.

Azhar is recognised as a legitimate agent by the Professional Cricketers’ Association, which is understood not to have had any concerns about his conduct in county cricket on behalf of clients, including Yousuf, Younus Khan, Abdur Razzaq, Shahid Afridi and Kamran Akmal.

Azhar was in the Pakistan team hotel in London last Wednesday night. Sources confirmed Azhar mingled with players, including Mohammad Yousuf, on the night before the fourth Test against England at Lord’s, The Age reports.

Azhar’s meetings at the hotel came as his brother was negotiating with undercover reporters of the News of the World posing as businessmen interested in executing a betting sting.

This week, however, Azhar Majeed said he had been thrown out of the Pakistan team hotel before the Oval Test against England because he was “top of the list” of individuals banned from the entering players’ rooms. (ANI)
