Mahindra United beat Dempo 3-1 in I-League

Mumbai, Jan 19 (IANS) Defending Champions Dempo of Goa went down 3-1 against local outfit Mahindra United in eleventh round of the I-League football at the Cooperage Stadium here Monday.The match was actually scheduled for last month but was cancelled after Nov 26 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Mohammed Rafi gave the hosts lead in the 39th minute but Brazilian playmaker Beto headed in the equaliser for the Goan team five minutes after the breather. Nigerians Dohou and Edeh Chidi struck twice in the last 12 minutes to seal the fate in Mahindra’s favour.

Mahindra started on a defensive mode to keep but as the match progressed they did not have better ball possession as compared to Dempo.

The defending champions had the first shot at the goal when Joaquim Abranches, after being fed by Ranty Martins, failed to get it past Mahindra goalkeeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhary in the 11th minute.

Mahindra got its act together and an unmarked Rafi received the ball near the half line from the right flank, but was stopped by defender Mahesh Gawli.

Mahindra came close to open the scoring in the 23rd minute, when a precise cross from Rafi found an unguarded Edeh in the box but the Nigerian failed to connect the ball.

Six minutes before the break, Mahindra broke the deadlock after Rafi tapped in a pass from Edeh, who got the loose ball off a rebound from the goalkeeper.

In the 49th minute, Dempo pulled one back as Martins’ powerful left footer rebounded off the bar and an alert Beto headed in the equaliser.

Mahindra again came back strongly to break the deadlock in 78th minute after Douhou gave a through pass to Chidi, who shot it past Dempo goalie Satish Kumar to give his team a 2-1 lead.

Douhou netted in winner in the 83rd minute to seal the fate of the game.
