Maharashtra awards state kabaddi players for World Cup win
March 7th, 2012 - 9:59 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, March 7 (IANS) In a gesture aimed at encouraging sports other than cricket, Maharashtra government Wednesday awarded Rs.10 million to each of the three players from the state who were part of the recent World Cup winning kabaddi team.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan made the announcement to give Rs.one crore to Pune’s Deepika Joseph and Mumbai’s Suvarna Bartakke and Abhilasha Mhatre, besides an award of Rs.2.50 million to their coach, Ramesh Bhendigiri of Kolhapur.
Chavan also said that the state government would soon formulate a policy for extending similar rewards to encourage sportspersons in various categories and create a conducive environment to attract more young boys and girls to different sports disciplines.
On the occasion, the chief minister felicitated the three players and their coach along with Sports Minister Padmakar Walvi and other officials.
