Ohio, May 30 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Luke Fickell has been named as the interim coach of the Ohio State University football team after their long time first team coach Jim Tressel stepped down.

Fickell was the assistant head coach of the team. He was also the co-defensive coordinator of the team but he has been given the responsibility to coach the team on the interim basis for the 2011-2012 season. The university plans to name a new coach after the period. The school however expressed their full confidence in Fickell’s ability to lead the team.

58-year-old Tressel registered the record 106-22 when he was the coach of the team. He released a statement shortly after he was relieved of his duties as the leader of the team’s technical team.

The statement said that, “After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach.”

Reports say Tressel’s decision to step down is as a result of the impending hearing of the case involving the six players who traded their uniforms and other memorabilia to a man who owns a tattoo parlor. The six players will meet the National Collegiate Athletic Association disciplinary committee.
