London, June 25 (IANS) It was time for a walk down memory lane as the Indian team that won the 1983 cricket World Cup gathered at the historic Lord’s for a silver jubilee reunion. As they re-lived the moments of glory on the same ground this day 25 years ago, the team mates made a wish for at least one more World Cup win for India.
“The current team is playing well and I am sure they can do it,” said Kapil Dev, who led India to the historic victory.
“We are all looking at 2011 and we are hoping we can lift the cup again,” said Sunil Gavaskar, a key member of that squad.
All members of the team, in Indian suits specially prepared for the occasion, first gathered at the Coronation grounds, a favourite picnic spot here, before moving to the pitch and posing for photographers.
Agriculture Minister and Indian cricket board chief Sharad Pawar missed a crucial meeting of the government and its Left allies to be part of the occasion. “My being here is in itself a major news in my country at a time of a serious political situation,” he said.
“I am here to celebrate the glory of our country. The generation of the 1983 squad continues to enthuse our new generation of cricket.”
