Lloyd tips Murray to win “multiple” Grand Slam titlesDecember 22nd, 2008 - 5:45 pm ICT by ANI
London, Dec 22 (ANI): British tennis sensation Andy Murray has been tipped to win “multiple” Grand Slam titles by Davis Cup captain John Lloyd.
Former British star Lloyd believes Murray, 21, who begins the new season next week following a gruelling winter training camp in Florida, will win the first Major of his career in 2009.
Murray, ranked at No 4 in the world, returns to Britain to spend Christmas here before flying to Abu Dhabi for an exhibition event, The Sun reported.
Lloyd, who reached the Aussie Open final in 1977, said: “Andy reached the US Open final last season, won two Masters Series titles and qualified for the Masters Cup - but he will be looking to have an even better season this time.
“He wants to win a Slam next year and I think he will. A player’’s first Slam is always the big one and you have to remember that, in Britain, we have not had one since Fred Perry in the 1930s. You cannot go too far as he has not won anything.”
“But if Andy gets the first one, and he has a good shot in 2009, he will look to get more. He is two or three years away from his best tennis. He could win multiple Slams, maybe three or four. Why not?” Lloyd said.
Murray, who beat Rafa Nadal in the US Open semi-finals before losing to Roger Federer in the final, is now a major contender at every event.
After joining Federer and Nadal at the money-spinning exhibition in the United Arab Emirates next week, he heads to Doha - a tournament he won this year - before going to Melbourne. (ANI)
