Liverpool stunned by Reading in FA Cup third round
January 14th, 2010 - 5:38 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Jan 14 (DPA) Liverpool were sent packing in the third round of the FA Cup after they were upended 2-1 by Championship side Reading in a replay at Anfield.
Shane Long snatched the winner in extra time to pour more misery on Rafael Benitez’s side, who are already out of contention in the Premier League race.
A deflected goal by Ryan Bertrand looked to have given Liverpool a narrow victory, but Gylfi Sigurdsson scored from the penalty spot in second-half injury time after a foul on Long by Yossi Benayoun.
Ten minutes into the extra time, Reading stunned Liverpool again when Long scored from close range.
Newcastle United beat Plymouth 3-0 in the night’s other match.
