Beijing, Aug 15 (DPA) Nastia Liukin helped the United States women’s gymnastics team make up for the disappointment of finishing second to China in the team competition by winning gold Friday in the all-around event at the National Indoor Stadium in Beijing. The 18-year-old secured the win with a total of 63.325 points for the four disciplines of vault, uneven bars, high beam and floor exercise, with compatriot and world champion Shawn Johnson taking silver with 62.725 points.
China’s Yang Yilin had to be satisfied with bronze after scoring a total of 62.650 points.
Liukin, who is the daughter of former Soviet champion gymnasts, Olympic gold medalist Valeri Liukin and world champion rhythmic gymnast Anna Kotchneva, scored 15.025 on the vault, 16.650 on the uneven bars, 16,125 on the beam and 15.525 on the floor.
“I can’t believe it still. I worked so hard for many years for this, I don’t know what to say,” said Liukin.
“I couldn’t have been here without my parents.”
Johnson lost her chance for gold after scoring 15.275 on the uneven bars in her second rotation while Yang’s 15.000 in the floor exercise left the team gold medallist in third place.
It’s been a long road, I feel like the baby of the group,” said the 16-year-old Johnson. “To come out with silver is an amazing experience.”
