Len Berman Leaving WNBC
April 1st, 2009 - 11:36 pm ICT by GDIn yet another major reshuffle involving television icons WNBC sportscaster Len Berman is leaving the station after 24 years of appearing on the channel.
No mention of his leaving was made at the time of or after the 6pm sportscast but Richard Huff of the NYDaily News said Berman had sent a note to the staff of the station earlier saying, “I’ve had a great run here at WNBC and will miss the talented people I’ve worked with over the years both on and off the air. I’m looking forward to the various media projects I’ll be involved with.”
Huff also said that news director Vickie Burns had sent an email to the staff telling them that Berman had an “nterest in pursuing different opportunities within the local sports arena. To that end, we have mutually agreed that the time is right for Len to take advantage of those opportunities.”
Len Berman has been a sportscaster since 1985 on WNBC. He is said to have “reached a settlement of his contract” with WNBC and could well be another victim of the “”ongoing wave of cost-cutting at local TV news operations which has swept out numerous big names.” Berman has said that he is likely to be with WNBC till May this year.
Gawker had already reported a “pervasive rumor” that two ain anchors on NBC’s biggest stations WNBC and KNBC-Los Angeles were in the line of departures.
It is rumored that Bruce Beck may replace Berman as the lead sports anchor on WNBC later.
