‘Lee firming for World Cup selection after impressing in Melbourne ODI’
January 17th, 2011 - 3:20 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Jan 17(ANI): Australian fast bowler Brett Lee is ready to lead the national team’s bowling attack in next month’s 50-over World Cup after impressing in the Melbourne ODI win over England, a noted cricket columnist has said.
Australia had defeated England by six wickets in the match held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Writing in the Herald Sun, Ron Reed said: “His previous one-day international was in India 15 months ago and he hasn’t played a Test since limping off the MCG with a broken foot two years ago against South Africa.”
“Since, he has retired from Test cricket and been more or less invisible until, there he was in the two Twenty20 internationals last week. Now he has his hand up for the World Cup, and is looking good for it.”
Reed also said that the right-arm fast bowler was the ‘pick of Australia’s bowlers’ when the rest of the bowling was ordinary as England piled up 294.
“Lee was the pick of Australia’s bowlers, unlucky not to have better figures than his 2-43 off nine overs, an analysis fattened when tailender Ajmal Shahzad smashed his final ball for six,” Reed wrote.
The 34-year-old, who has been 14 months away from international cricket, is in Australia’s provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup, which will be trimmed to 15 later this month. (ANI)
