Lawson says Yousuf-Younus recall will make Pak a ’solid unit’
July 24th, 2010 - 2:32 pm ICT by ANILondon, July 24(ANI): Former Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson believes that former captains Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan should be recalled for strengthening the team’s middle order.
Following the unexpected Test retirement of skipper Shahid Afridi, it has been reported that the Pakistani team management is considering to recall Yousuf and Younis, who have been cleared to represent the team after being earlier banned ‘indefinitely’ by the board after the winless Australia tour.
“First thing to consider is that both players are brilliant test cricketers. This team could do with a number three or four batsman. The way the team is developing, beginning with Salman Butt who is becoming consistent - it’s starting to look good. Still, they need proper number three and four batsmen,” PakPassion.net quoted Lawson, as saying.
“It’s a load of rubbish to put youngsters at those spots and it defies all cricketing logic. Yet, Azhar Ali looks good enough to play for a long time, same goes for Umar Amin. However, playing both of the lads at the same time in those positions is just not on,” he added.
Lawson further said that even if one of them makes a comeback, it would make the team a “pretty solid unit”.
“I know Mohammad Yousuf does not prefer batting at that number, but if you are the best batsman in the side - you should be batting at that spot,” Lawson said.
“Younus is a phenomenal contributor to the team as a player. Sure, when he became captain - things went a little crazy. However, just as a senior player - he is brilliant. Plus, just look at Younus’ age - he is just 32 years of age and has a good three-four years left in him,” he added. (ANI)
