July 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The mention of the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner reminds one of a mercurial team owner who did not know where to stop when it came to build his baseball dynasty. He was termed as the most aggressive go getter in the history of baseball who hired and fired people at his will. However, this is just one sided view of his personality. He passed away yesterday and his demise has resulted in a series of tributes and homages being paid to his memory. Those who knew him well up close and personal are of the opinion that deep inside he was a truly benevolent person but deliberately kept that side under wraps.
The people in Tampa Bay region used to see his acts of kindness that touched the lives of the needy and deprived. In his life he lent a helping hand to many people and families who still remember his gracious acts. The former mayor of Tampa Dick Greco knows him well and he said that he was often approached by the Yankees owner to know more about the people in distress in the region. The people in New York only came to know only about his mercurial side.
He was always willing to help the teenagers who wanted to shine in sports and wanted to take it up as a career. He also donated to a number of organizations in his life and some of them had nothing to do with sports. He was always discreet about his tendency to help out others and eve asked those received help not to be vocal about it.
