July 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) 34-year-old switch-hitter Lance Berkman has agreed to join the New York Yankees. The Houston Astros and the New York Yankees on Friday reached a deal under which the New York Yankees will get Lance Berkman and $4 million while the Houston Astros will be receiving pitcher Mark Melancon and infield Jimmy Paredes. On Friday Lance Berkman was kept away from the team lineup that met against Milwaukee Brewers. The deal would be officially announced on Saturday following the rules of the 10-and-5 veto right of Lance Berkman.
Lance Berkman had played 10 years and has been with the same team for the last 5 years, this provides him a full no-trade right. Under the Major League Baseball rule such a player can only be traded after 24 hours of his agreeing to the deal. On Friday at around 3 p.m., Lance Berkman waived his right to join the New York Yankees, and the deal therefore can only be announced officially after 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The trade will no doubt benefit both the teams. Lance Berkman was considered as one of the most feared hitters in the National League and his inclusion in New York Yankees will provide the team with stability at DH. However, with a knee surgery done this May, the player has hit an average of 0.245 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs in 85 games. On Friday the veteran player said that he is a little nervous and apprehensive about the whole trade. He added that being a Texan, he had played at Rice and the city is “like the womb” where he feels comfortable.
