Konwar bags five to bowl out UP for 213 (Ranji Roundup)

New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) Off-spinner Arlen Konwar produced an excellent spell as newly promoted Assam stunned former champions Uttar Pradesh by dismissing them for just 213 runs in the first innings on the first day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal in Guwahati Thursday.
Konwar picked up five for 79 as Assam emerged on top after the first day’s play at the North-East Frontier Railway Stadium. At stumps, Assam were 17 for one with Parvez Aziz batting on four and the veteran Amol Muzumdar yet to open his account.

The Uttar Pradesh top-order vindicated Mohammmed Kaif’s decision to bat first as the first two wickets adding 96 runs. Opener Shivakant Shukla gave a good start with his stroke-filled 47 while Kaif anchored the innings with a sedate 56.

Left-arm spinner Sairaj Bahutule also picked up three for 41 to wrap up the tail.
