Kolkata ITF: Yannick upsets Ranjeet, Bhambri in second round
September 29th, 2009 - 8:53 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Sep 29 (IANS) Delhi’s Yannick Nelord shocked sixth-seeded Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan in a three-setter while teenage sensation Yuki Bhambri had little difficulty in prevailing over qualifier Rohan Gide to reach the pre-quarterfinals of the $15,000 ONGC-ITF tournament here Tuesday.
Yannick came back strongly after dropping the opening set to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in 137 minutes at the Bengal Tennis Association Complex.
The opening set saw as many as seven service breaks. Ranjeet was leading 3-0 when Yannick woke up from the stupor, reeling off five games. He, in fact, was leading 5-3 at one point but made a steady stream of errors to lose the next five games and the set.
But the Delhi boy came back in the second set, breaking his rival in the second and fourth game.
Taking the momentum to the decider, Yannick unleashed an array of shots breaking Ranjeet in the first and seventh games to wrap up the set and the match.
In another opening round clash, fifth-seeded Bhambri took 69 minutes to dispose off Gide 6-1,6-3. The opening set saw Bhambri breaking Gide in the second, fourth and sixth game, after getting broken in the first.
In the second set, Bhambri broke Gide thrice in the first, third and ninth games. Gide broke back in the eighth, but that was not enough to contain 17-year-old Delhi youngster.
Local lad and eighth seed Rupesh Roy also reached the pre-quarterfinals defeating wild card Purav Raja 6-1, 7-6(7-2).
