Kohli impresses with ball
October 17th, 2011 - 11:17 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni Monday placed confidence in homeboy Virat Kohli when he tossed him the ball during the 11th over of the England innings in the second One-day International (ODI) at the Ferozeshah Kotla here.
The 22-year-old middle-order batsman was met a with a loud cheer from the crowd and straightway put both Kevin Pietersen and Ravi Bopara in a spot of bother.
The Delhi boy is understandably well familiar with the conditions here, having honed his cricketing skills at the Ferozeshah Kotla. Perhaps this is what must have prompted Dhoni to try him out ahead of part-time spinner Suresh Raina.
And Kohli did not disappoint with his medium pace. Though he went wicketless with figures of 5-0-18-0, he was at his economical best. Kohli has bowled only in 13 of the 66 ODIs he has played but this day he kept the pressure on the England batsmen. He gave only nine runs in the four overs before Samit Patel struck him for a four through the covers in the 41st over.
Kohli, with his disguised action, was spot on with his line and length on the slow surface and intelligently took the pace of the ball. Dhoni took him off after a three-over spell and brought him again twice.
On the eve of the match Sunday, Kohli had said that it will take time for the players to get adjusted to the rule changes. But the youngster Monday was quick to make the most of the new rule of running out the non-striker when he is out of the crease. Kohli had a chance to run out Patel, who had come out of the crease in the non-striker’s end in the 35th over. But he did not take the bails off even as Patel scampered back to the crease.
Tipped by many as future skipper, Kohli sure seems to be on course.
