Kiwi athlete Hamblin says she’s reserved her best for Delhi CWG
September 30th, 2010 - 4:59 pm ICT by ANIWellington, Sep 30 (ANI): New Zealand’s Commonwealth medal hope Nikki Hamblin has said that she hasn’t yet produced the top-class performance despite her record-breaking year in 800m and 1500m.
The English-born runner, who got New Zealand citizenship last year, said: “I am happy, but I still feel like I haven’t yet had the best race I can.”
“I feel my racing this year has never got going and that’s mainly because we’ve tried to peak in October, which is really late, so basically we were doing three weeks’ racing, three weeks’ training.
“I was getting to the third race, feeling OK, and wanting to race again. Hopefully all that will pay off and I have the best form I’ve had all season in Delhi,” Stuff.co.nz quoted her, as saying.
After stints in England and Belgium, she prepared in Hong Kong, where humidity reached 90 per cent and temperatures 30 degrees, training alongside 2006 Commonwealth Games 1500 runner Paul Hamblyn.
Hamblin’s last race was the Continental Cup in the first weekend of September, where she dipped under the two-minute barrier for the first time for 800m, clocking a personal best of 1.59.66.
She said her prospects in the 800m depend on having the confidence to push hard from the start, and catch the breakaway. (ANI)
