Mohali (Punjab), Jan 27 (IANS) To promote cricket in the catchment areas, Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab introduced an inter-state Twenty20 cricket tournament here Tuesday. Five teams — two from Punjab and one each from Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh — will participate in the six-day Kings XI Punjab Cup tournament starting Wednesday at the Sector-16 Stadium. The winning team will bag Rs.300,000 and the runners-up Rs.200,000.

“This is for the first time that any franchisee team of IPL is organising its own Cup. Through this tournament, we aim to identify and nurture the north Indian talent,” Bollywood actress Preity Zinta, co-owner of Kings XI Pinjab, told reporters here.

“I believe that this region has unbounded talent and we just need to channel this talent in a fruitful direction. My motto is Jiyo Punjabi, Khedo Punjabi,” she said.

She also said that Kings XI Punjab will soon come up with an academy in association with the PCA and the selection trials will be held Feb 16-17.

“Any player from any region of the world can participate in the trials and if he is selected then rest will be our academy’s duty on how to draft his bright future in the game,” she said.
