New Delhi, April 28 (IANS) The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Thursday announced a 21-member squad for the Asian Championships May 19-22 at Tashkent, with Mausam Khatri and Alka Tomar leading the charge in the men’s and women’s categories.
The WFI selection committee picked the team after conducting trials at training centres in Patiala and Sonepat last week. Seven wrestlers each will compete in the men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman category while as many have been picked for the women’s freestyle.
The Asian Championship will be the first assignment for the wrestlers post the recently held WFI elections.
WFI secrertary general told IANS that the team will continue to train at the training centres and will leave two days before the competition. World Champion Sushil Kumar will not be taking part in the event as he has chosen other tournaments for London Olympics preparation.
“Sushil will take part in the Commonwealth and World Championships later this year. I am expecting a good show from the selected wrestlers though it is not a full strenght squad,” Singh told IANS.
Singh said he is expecting a podium finish from Asian Games bronze medallist Mausam Khatri, who competes in the 96 kg. category.
