Kerala to set up shooting complex

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 11 (IANS) An hour after India won its first gold medal for shooting at the Beijing Olympics, state Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar announced Monday that a Rs.3 million shooting complex would be set up in Kerala. The shooting complex will come up in Thodupuzha in Idukki district.

“Kerala has bright prospects in shooting and hence we decided to set up a shooting complex. We will soon be setting up more,” Vijayakumar told reporters.

A shooting complex has been on the cards for long as India’s national shooting coach since 1993, Sunny Thomas, who hails from Kerala, has been demanding one.

“One of the main reasons why India has not been able to do well in sports is the partisan attitude shown by the central government. Kerala has always done well in sports but the central government’s attitude is not conducive.” said the minister.
