Srinagar, June 5 (IANS) Services beat holders Punjab 2-1 while Kerala outplayed hosts Jammu and Kashmir 3-1 in the Group ‘A’ quarterfinal league of Santosh Trophy football championship at the Bakshi Stadium here Thursday. Services played exceptionally throughout and dominated the Punjab in the mid-field.
S. Raleng scored the first goal for Services in the 8th minute of the first half. The lead was doubled in the 27th minute by Lal Ruatafela. The Services went into the breather 2-0.
It was only in the 11th minute of the second half that Harvinder Singh managed to beat the strong Services defence to pull one back for Punjab.
More than 20,000 spectators packed the stadium to watch the home team take on Kerala.
The Kerala boys looked more focussed in their game plan. In the very opening moments Kashmir missed a couple of chances. Kerala’s Abdul Noushad beat the defence to score in the 12th minute.
Three minutes before half time, Asif gave a sharp pass to striker Ishfaq, who scored the equaliser.
Kerala strengthened its defence in the second half to tackle the effective J&K forward Ishfaq. Kerala defenders kept Ishfaq in check. J&K failed to make the most of two free kicks just outside the box.
Abdul Noushad scored on a counter attack in the 6th minute of the second half followed by Asif Saheer’s strike in the 30th minute, scattering the Kashmiri defence.
