Kerala government takes over Trivandrum Golf Club
December 4th, 2009 - 10:58 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 4 (IANS) The century-old Trivandrum Golf Club, situated in the heart of the city, got a reprieve from closure last year. But this time, the Kerala government means business and Friday evening it gave notice to the club members to vacate the premises in a month’s time.
The notice was issued by the Kerala Revenue Department.
A. Abdul Wahid, private secretary to K.P.Rajendran, Minister for Revenue, confirmed to IANS that a notice had been sent and it was accepted by the club office staff.
Last year, a similar notice was given, but following the intervention of the Kerala High Court possession of the club was returned to its members. However, the court had said the government can go ahead by observing the rules prescribed. “This time we have done that,” said Wahid.
Situated on a 25-acre plot of prime property in the heart of the city, the club’s facilities are used by less than 200 members, most of whom are bureaucrats and politicians.
The Kerala High Court had last year asked the government to return the possession of the club, 24 hours after the state revenue officials sealed the club in a swift move.
The court had asked the Revenue Secretary Nivedita Haran to appear in person, because she violated norms and showed disrespect to the court.
“This time we have conducted the proceedings of the takeover by giving them notice and we also heard them,” said Wahid.
According to reports, the Sports Council is likely to be given temporary charge of the club after the government takes possession.
Meanwhile, the office bearers of the club are yet to react to the development.
