Kenyans dominate Nagpur marathon
January 30th, 2011 - 2:41 pm ICT by IANSNagpur, Jan 30 (IANS) Kenyans John Kui won the full marathon for men while Jem Muya won the half marathon for women in the third edition of the Nagpur International Marathon Sunday, which saw a participation of more than 1.5 lakh people.More than 50 international athletes from 16 countries of Africa, Australia and Europe participated in the marathon that was organised to mark the 63rd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Commonwealth and Asian games medallists Kavita Raut, Sudha Singh and Preeja Sreedharan also participated in the marathon.
Raut stood 13th in the women’s half marathon.
“As many as 10 events were held to mark the ‘World Non-Violence Day’ including the full marathon for men (42.195 km) and half marathon (21.097 km) for women,” a Nagpur International Marathon spokesperson said.
Separate races of 12 km and 10 km were also held for men and women athletes of Maharashtra.
“The five km and three km races for men and women, respectively, were organised for athletes under 18,” the spokesperson said.
“Two separate races for men and women above the age of 40 were also held. Tricycle and wheelchair races were organised for the physically challenged,” he added.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, union ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh and Mukul Vasnik flagged off the marathon that terminated at the Yashwantrao Stadium.
