March 16, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): A 22-year-old American rower accomplished a solo voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday. She contacted a dock in the coffee-brown waters of Guyana to declare a record as the youngest human being to achieve the exploit.
Katie Spotz, who spent in excess of two months single-handedly at sea, embraced her father and brother as 200 people rooted for her on her entrance in the South American capital.
Spotz mentioned that the most difficult part was merely the solo part. She told that she fought against monotony and had difficulty napping within the restricted 19-foot row boat.
The competitor from Ohio embarked from Dakar in Senegal on January 3. She tolerated uneven seas during the 2,817-mile voyage. She journeyed devoid of any assistance boat besides a Coast Guard boat that ushered her to Guyana’s coast.
She rowed to collect cash and consciousness for the Blue Planet Run Foundation, a non-profit organization. Their objective is to get spotless drinking water to the projected 1 billion people internationally who require it.
Her tutor, Sam Williams, mentioned that the records are a windfall for Katie. Rowing the Atlantic and collecting finances for sparkling water are the issues about which she is concerned genuinely.
The evidence for the youngest person to travel across an ocean singly was established by Oliver Hicks, who was 23 when he paddled from New Jersey to England in 2005. Kenneth Crutchlow of the Ocean Rowing Society has verbalized that his society will have to verify Spotz’s expedition but she seems to have busted the existing record.
Spotz paddled for as many as 10 hours a day with stoppages for sleeping, course-plotting and boat safeguarding. At night, she would float on board the specifically constructed ocean row boat, which had apparatus including solar panels for power, a satellite phone and a laptop computer. She had a little amount of unsullied food except for sprouts grown on board the boat.
