Karnataka Police warn against betting on World Cup matches
February 27th, 2011 - 11:11 pm ICT by IANSBangalore, Feb 27 (IANS) Police in Karnataka would conduct raids on anti-social elements indulging in betting during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 matches, a top police official said Sunday.”We will carry out raids to prevent betting on World Cup matches, especially the four being played in Bangalore over the next three weeks,” Karnataka Director General of Police S.T. Ramesh said in a statement here.
Warning offedners that action would be taken under the relevant laws, Ramesh said the Bangalore police had busted a betting mafia in connection with the high-profile India-England tie being played here Sunday.
Two people - Dinesh Kumar (36) and Vadivelu (34) - were arrested by the crime branch’s special squad during a raid in upscale Jayanagar area, while eight other bookies managed to flee.
“Action will be initiated against the accused under the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act 1985,” Ramesh said.
The raiding squad seized Rs.200,000 from Dinesh Kumar who had collected the money from punters.
In addition, eight mobile handsets, an LCD television and details of people involved in the racket were also recovered from the duo.
In a related development, the city police arrested two persons for selling match tickets in black market outside the M.A.Chinnaswamy stadium.
“We have also seized 25 tickets, Rs. 85,000 and two cell phones,” Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters at the stadium.
