Kapil Dev slams ban on media from covering WC final
April 1st, 2011 - 8:02 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Apr 1 (ANI): Former cricketer Kapil Dev today slammed the recent ban on the media from covering the World Cup final to be played between India and Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium on Saturday.
Talking to reporters, Dev said media support is necessary for any sport.
“Without media’s support today, no sport is as big (as cricket). Technically, I don’t know what is wrong and right, but how can we ban media?” he asked.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cancelled its official approval for the coverage of remaining matches of the World Cup, citing violation of video footage duration norms on TV channels. The ban applies to only TV journalist as of now.
This decision means that India’s broadcast media cannot cover the final on Saturday.
In effect, the decision bars the electronic media from covering pre-and post-match news conferences of the players as well as team practice sessions.
The Broadcast Editors’ Association (BEA) has condemned the decision of the ICC. (ANI)
