Rio de Janeiro, Jan.19 (ANI): Brazilian soccer star Kaka was a sad man today, when he heard of the collapse of the church in which he married his teenaged bride Caroline Celico in 2005.
At least 60 and perhaps as many as 400 people were inside the Renascer em Cristo (Reborn in Christ) church when the roof fell in during a Sunday afternoon service, reports The Telegraph.
At least seven people died in the tragedy, and an unknown number of people are still stuck beneath the rubble.
Police did not give a reason for the accident.
Kaka, a devout Protestant who is known for his “I Belong to Jesus” T-shirts, has long been a follower at the church.
He gave the church the gold trophy he won when elected FIFA World Player of the year for 2007.
However, the church, like many of Brazil’’s Protestant sects, is controversial.
The couple who founded it were arrested when entering the United States in 2007 and jailed for five months on money laundering, tax evasion and other financially related charges. They face similar charges in Brazilian courts.
The accident comes as the Milan star faces intense speculation over his future. The Arab owners of Manchester City have offered to pay a world record transfer fee to lure him to their club. (ANI)
