Pitcher Joe Martinez was struck in the head by a line drive from Mike Cameron in today’s game. Last heard he had a concussion and was OK otherwise. He did not seem to have any broken bones or any severe injuries but he will be kept in the hospital overnight for observation. He is reported to have called his home to speak to his parents in New Jersey who watched him being hit on TV.
Martinez, 26, is a pitcher for the San Francisco Giants of MLB. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, “He was bleeding quite a bit. That ball was smoked. He didn’t have a chance.”
Martinez was born on February 26, 1983 in South Orange, New Jersey and later played for the Augusta Greenjackets, the San Jose Giants and recently Connecticut Defenders in 2008, where he played 10 games with an ERA of 2.49.
Martinez was later signed by the San Francisco Giants of MLB and debuted on the field on Tuesday with an ERA of 9.00 in a game that the Giants won. He had made his debut with four more home-grown players. The injury happened when Martinez was in his second game for the San Francisco Giants of MLB. He was hit in the head by a line drive from Mike Cameron in the ninth innings when playing against the Milwaukee Brewers. He was conscious at the time of being removed from the field.
The Giants continued the game after Martinez was removed from the field and won the game by 7-1.
