JK Bank to sponsor Santosh Trophy soccerMay 19th, 2008 - 9:17 pm ICT by admin
Srinagar, May 19 (IANS) The local Jammu and Kashmir Bank has become the title sponsor for the 62nd Santosh Trophy Football Championship, starting here May 25. The national football championship for the Santosh Trophy is being held in Kashmir after 30 years.
Kashmir hosted Santosh Trophy in 1978, but that was long before the eruption of militancy and terrorist violence in the state.
“According to an agreement signed here between the Jammu and Kashmir Bank and Zee sports, the championship will now be called ‘JK Bank National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy 2007-2008′,” an official of the bank said here.
“Matches would be played simultaneously both in Srinagar and winter capital Jammu, but all the matches from quarter-finals onwards would be played at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar,” a state sports department official said.
In all, 31 state teams would compete in the championship.
The tournament would be inaugurated by the state governor, Lt. General (retired) S.K. Sinha at the Bakshi Stadium here. The Polo Grounds is the other venue to host some of the matches.
The official broadcaster, Zee Sports, would provide live coverage of the matches from quarter-final stage onwards till the conclusion of the championship June 15.
