Jimmie johnson storms the Bristol Motor Speedway at the Food City 500
March 22nd, 2010 - 8:31 pm ICT by Pen Men At Work ( Leave a comment )March 22, 2010, (Pen Men at Work): The Food City 500 was tame in comparison to the earlier race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway two weeks ago. The 115,000 fans strong crowd watched in awe as Jimmie Johnson drove a strong race, finishing with the gold.
Jimmie Johnson, racing for the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, car No. 48, survived the 13-car wreckage with 157 laps to go. He then went on to drive a gem of a race, racking up his 50th win in the NASCAR Sprint Cup. This, though was his first victory at Bristol.
He was followed by Tony Stewart, driving the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, gambled his pit stop, changing only two tires and making a dash with just 10 laps to run. Kurt Busch, who led the pack for the day’s highest 278 laps, finished third in his No.2 Penske Racing Dodge. Both Stewart and Busch were ousted from the top podium after the four time defending Sprint Cup champion took on four new tires on the final pit stop.
He exited the pits behind five other cars, in which Steward and Bosch were present. However, the determined driver made the perfect moves and cleared his way through the pack.
In the post race interview he said, “I thought we were in trouble after the final restart, but the four new tires made all the difference.”. This dominant display, however, is finding a voice of opposition, arguing about his dominance over the past four seasons is hurting the series.
This season too, the No. 48 seems pretty sure to bag the fifth consecutive win, and even though it is early in the season, they have already bagged three wins. Jimmie also voices his optimism saying, “It is early and there is lot of racing to be done but if we start winning on tracks like Bristol, than the other boys should better look out!”
Championship leading driver Kevin Harvick is slowly loosing ground and is just a point ahead of Matt Kenseth and 14 adrift from Johnson.
