Jeremy Mayfield Stepmom Lawsuit: ‘Mind Your Language’
July 31st, 2009 - 1:00 am ICT by GD
Suspended Sprint Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield is set to learn the hard way, that the liberty of free speech also comes with the fine print of the involved susceptibility of free speakers to get sued for shooting off their mouths. Case in point being, his step mom Lisa Mayfield’s recent lawsuit, that seeks damages for public statements made by Jeremy in the context of his civil suit against NASCAR.
The legal equivalent of “Watch your mouth”, the defamation suit alleges false, defamatory and slanderous statements made by Jeremy. The suit seeks compensatory damages in the excess of $10,000, punitive damages to the tune of $ 10,000 and above, along with unspecified damages that are left open to the discretion of the court.
For the record, Lisa Mayfield, whose corroboration of NASCAR’s allegation of substance-abuse by Jeremy Mayfield, had prompted his hate campaign against his step mom, who he had called “a whore” and publicly accused of killing his father, had in her NASCAR related testimony against Mayfield Jr, testified to having seen him use methamphetamine on numerous occasions amounting to about 30 times.
The testimony of course, had been significantly instrumental in securing NASCAR’s requested reinstatement of Jeremy Mayfield’s indefinite ban for violation of their substance abuse policy, and had initiated the mud-slinging contest, with Jeremy lashing back publicly at his stepmother. While the smear-campaign seems to have been a mutual one, Lisa Mayfield for the time being, seems to be ahead in the race. What remains to be seen, of course, is how much murkier this family slime-fest gets.
