Dec 19, (THAINDIAN NEWS) It was a nail biting match between Canadian boxer Jean Pascal and American boxer Bernard Hopkins who fought against each other to win the much coveted World Boxing Council light heavyweight championship title. The hard fought match tuned out to be a total entertaining one as both the boxers left no stones unturned to win the match. However, in the end, the match turned out to be a draw and Jean Pascal managed to retain his 175-pound title by scoring 12-round majority draw.
There were about 16,000 audience in the stadium who cheered aloud for their favorite players. However, the two judges of the match, Daniel Van de Wiele and Claude Paquette declared that the bout was a draw as both the players scored 113-113 and 114-114 but another judge Steve Morrow gave Bernard Hopkins 114-112 points. This result of the bout has not disappointed the Philadelphia player and he felt the decision was a robbery which surely hurts the sports. The American boxer said that this kind of unjust treatment is the reason for which American boxers do not fight outside their home city.
The judges said that though Bernard Hopkins scored the last four rounds but the early two knockdowns by Jean Pascal came in his favor. In his interview Bernard Hopkins said that he was dominating the ring but the result was not in his favor. On the other hand, Jean Pascal, the winner of the light weight championship, in post fight press conference said that though he “dropped” the American boxer two times on the ground but he is not happy. The Canadian boxer said that though he won the championship but he wants be called as an outright champion. The champion won $1.5 million as the prize money along with the title.
