JCT looking to overcome poor I-League start against Churchill
December 6th, 2010 - 8:38 pm ICT by IANSGurgaon, Dec 6 (IANS) After a surprise defeat against newly-promoted HAL, JCT will aim to come back to winning ways against Churchill Brothers in their second round match of I-League football at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium here Tuesday.
JCT have happy memories from their last encounter against Churchill Brothers, having beaten the Goan team 1-0 last month to make the Durand Cup final. But in their last I-League meeting, Churchill humiliated JCT 6-0 to finish runners-up in the league.
While JCT made a poor start in the league, Churchill were held 1-1 in their opening match against title-holders Dempo.
Churchill coach Vincent Subramanium, a former Singapore national coach, knows that a good start is important as the race can become close at the end.
“The I-League is a 26-game marathon and this is just the second game. But the title race can become very tight, so we need a good start,” said Subramaniam.
With only one foreign import, in captain Odafe Onyeka Okolie of Nigeria, in the side, Subramaniam is confident of winning the league.
“We have a good attack. But we want to recruit good foreigners and are looking out for a striker and a midfielder who shall be joining us next week hopefully,” said the Singaporean, who had also coached Home United.
JCT coach Parminder Singh will be drawing inspiration from the team’s win in the Durand Cup.
“We played well in the Durand and our defenders were successful in marking Odafe. We will have an interesting and a good match tomorrow,” he said.
