Jayaram stuns World No.7 at Japan Open

Tokyo, Sep 21 (IANS) Indians, including star shuttler Saina Nehwal won their first round matches at the Japan Open Superseries event here Wednesday. Ajay Jayaram stunned World No.7 Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam.

Fourth-seeded Saina took 31 minutes to get past Thailand’s Inthanon Ratchanok 21-17, 21-10 in the opening round of the women’s singles. She plays Mingtian Fu of Singapore in the second round Thursday.

The men’s singles saw Parupalli Kashyap and Ajay Jayaram battling hard to overcome the first hurdle.

Kashyap beat Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen 19-21, 21-14, 21-14 while Jayaram defeated the seventh-seeded Tien Minh Nguyen 21-18, 21-19.

Kashyap next faces sixth-seeded Jin Chen of China while Jayaram will meet Singapore’s Simon Santoso.

The women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa scored a comprehensive win over Chinese Taipei’s Hsin Yun Chang and Chia Wen Lai 21-8, 21-17. Jwala then turned up with V. Diju to beat the Japanese pair of Shintaro Ikeda and Reiko Shiota 22-20, 21-15 in the mixed doubles event.
