Jammu gets its first golf course
April 24th, 2011 - 6:59 pm ICT by IANSJammu, April 24 (IANS) The winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu got its first golf course Sunday, which Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described as “the best in the plains” of the country.
Abdullah inaugurated the Sidhra golf course, which touches the banks of river Tawi and spreading to the Shivalik range of mountains.
The first phase of nine holes has been set up while nine more holes will be added later.
“With so much scenic beauty surrounding the golf course here, I think this is the best in the plains of the country. I don’t think there is any matching golf course in the plains,” Abdullah told reporters.
He hoped this would be an “added attraction for tourists”.
Jammu is a stop-over for more than eight million pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi shrine, and most of the Kashmir Valley-bound tourists pass through this city of a million people.
“Soon we are going to open a golf course in Pahalgam (world famous resort in south Kashmir). All our golf courses, whether in Pahalgam, Jammu, Srinagar or Gulmarg, are of world class,” the chief minister said.
Two former chief ministers, Farooq Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad, were also present on the occasion.
