Srinagar, June 1 (IANS) Hosts Jammu and Kashmir beat Delhi by four goals to nil in an exciting match here Sunday in the first pre-quarter final knock-out of the ongoing 62nd Santosh Trophy Football Championship at Polo Grounds here. The excited crowd thronged the ground as the match ended. Even the chief guest on the occasion, Jammu and Kashmir Bank chairman Haseeb Drabu, was seen on his toes during the whole match, cheering and clapping every time the home players made a good move against the rivals.
Jammu and Kashmir played with two changes in their side - defender Arun Malhotra was replaced by Imran Rafiq and striker Asif played in place of injured Bilal Ahmad. But again the most applauded boy was centre-forward Ishfaq Ahmad wearing No. 11 jersey, who made heroic moves throughout and scored twice in the 10th and 86th minutes of the game.
The most effective striker was shown yellow card in the 25th minute, as he collided with Delhi goal-keeper Rajat Guha just outside the penalty area. It took Guha five minutes to recover and the game was stopped during the period.
Asif scored the second goal for Jammu and Kashmir in the 30th minute to put his team 2-0 ahead at the end of first half, mostly dominated by the hosts.
Delhi played much aggressively in the second half and had several good attacks on the rival goal post, which was defended well by the Jammu and Kashmir goal keeper Tanveer Ahmad.
Four minutes before the end, Ishfaq got the ball in the centre and, dogging four opponents, he scored on a beauty of a flick into the nets.
One minute later, Rizwan Sheikh made a gallant effort to score the fourth goal for Jammu and Kashmir that put the team in a comfortable position to have a deserving berth in the quarterfinals of the championship.
Four yellow cards were shown during the match, three to maroon-wear Delhi boys and one to a Jammu and Kashmir boy wearing white and blue. Referee Dinesh Nair of Gujarat had a tough time during the match.
