New Delhi , Nov 21 (ANI): Indian Test team captain Anil Kumble today said that batsman Yuvraj Singh would have to wait for some time before cementing his place in the longer version of the game.
Addressing a press conference on the eve of the first Test match against Pakistan at the Ferozshah Kotla stadium here, Kumble, however, added that in the coming years, the Indian batting would revolve around Yuvraj.
“Its tough to leave him (Yuvraj) out. He is in tremendous form and is a quality player who is important for the side. But I guess he would have to wait a bit before he becomes a regular member of the Test squad.
“Its unfortunate but thats the way it is. He is a great player and Indian batting would revolve around him in the coming years. He is a pillar of the side but Im afraid he would have to wait a little,” Kumble said.
Kumble added that Yuvraj had to be left out as the team needs the services of ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and VVS Laxman, who is considered a Test specialist.
He expressed the hope that Dhoni would recover from his ankle injury he had picked up in the last ODI against Pakistan in Jaipur, saying, “Well, he looks fine and there seems no problem.”
Commenting on the absence pacers S Sreesanth and RP Singh, who have been ruled out of the Delhi Test due to injuries, the veteran spinner said it was unfortunate that both bowlers would not be available for the match, but added that injuries are part and parcel of the game.
“Though we would miss them, I think the side has the quality and depth to go out and win the match,” Kumble said.
He hinted that left-arm spinner Murali Kartik would not be included in the playing 11, saying: “I guess it would be me and Harbhajan (Singh) but we would finalise the eleven tomorrow.”
Referring to his 10-wicket haul against Pakistan in an innings at the Ferozeshah Kotla in 1999, Kumble said that Delhi has been nice to me personally, and he was looking forward to a great start here.
Responding to a query as to how would he manage the presence of three former captains– Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid– and ODI skipper Dhoni in the dressing room, The Karnataka bowler said, I have been playing with them for the last 18 years. Im a positive person and I believe I would get inputs from them as well.”
Later, Kumble along with team manager Lalchand Rajput, and Pakistan team managementcaptain Shoaib Malik, coach Jeff Lawson and team manager Talat Ali had a meeting with ICC Match referee Ranjan Madugalle, who will officiate in the match. (ANI)
