Injured Bennett says only ‘minor tweaks’ required in his action
March 23rd, 2011 - 2:19 pm ICT by ANIWellington, Mar 23 (ANI): New Zealand fast bowler Hamish Bennett has said that his ungainly action isn’t to blame for the fact that injury has cut short his second straight tour.
As his teammates boarded a plane bound for Dhaka to face South Africa in quarterfinal yesterday, Bennett was flying out of Mumbai and back home to Christchurch.
Daryl Tuffey has officially replaced the 24-year-old in the New Zealand squad. Bennett injured his calf while bowling against Sri Lanka at the weekend and had also left last year’s test tour to India early with a groin strain,.
The latest injury will have many pointing to his unorthodox bowling style in which he appears to land awkwardly with every delivery, and suggests that without a major overhaul, his career could be a short one, Stuff.co.nz reports.
Bennett accepts he needs to make some “minor tweaks” to his action over the winter, but insists that aside from his two well-publicised injuries, he has never been troubled in the past.
“I’ve talked to AD [New Zealand bowling coach Allan Donald] about the landing and my action and also to our fitness trainer Bryan Stronach about things, because there’s a lot of time off now,” Bennett said.
“This is going to be a pretty big off-season for me to iron out a couple of little things. You can see on the super slow motion replays that there’s probably a bit of a problem with the way I land. I land on the outside of my foot which probably isn’t ideal,” he said.
“It’s only a little minor thing that I am going to need to correct. I don’t think it will take much time,” Bennett added. (ANI)
