Indian hockey team’s 2009 calendar released

New Delhi, Jan 21 (IANS) The Indian hockey team will, for the first time in recent years, have a year-long calendar and it was ratified at the ad hoc committee meeting. The Indian team has a tight summer schedule which includes the Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh, Malaysia, in April and the Asia Cup in Dubai in May, it was announced Wednesday.

Thereafter, the team will visit Europe in July-August to play Tests against England, Belgium, Spain and Holland.

Importantly, overseas teams will be playing Tests in India in October-November. Australia, Germany and Spain will be playing here before the Champions Trophy in Australia.

Convener of the ad hoc committee Mohammad Aslam Khan told IANS that Australia would be playing here in October and Germany and Spain on their way to Australia for the Champions Trophy.

“These tours were finalised when we met the hockey officials of these countries at the Beijing Olympics and the itinerary will be drawn up after consulting with some of the officials during next month’s Punjab Gold Cup tournament in Chandigarh,” he said.

The Indian team is currently playing a four-test series in Argentina and has won both the Test matches so far.

The Indian junior team has just returned after winning the silver medal at Australian Youth Olympic Festival at Sydney. They have been invited to play in the pre-World Cup Test event in Malaysia March 2009.
