London, May 21 (IANS) Spin legend Shane Warne wants India to use her cricketing powers responsibly to ensure that smaller nations are not trampled over in the search for more revenue.
Warne, who ended his professional career Friday night leading Rajasthan Royals to a 10-wicket win over Sachin Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians, said all national boards should give a six-week window to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Australian feels that IPL is good for cricket as it helps to break the barriers.
“The one thing I would like to see is all the national boards allocating a six-week break in the calendar for the IPL. I really believe the tournament is good for cricket. It breaks down the barriers between the players when you get to line up alongside people from other countries. Although the downside is that nobody seems to sledge any more!” Warne said in his column in The Daily Telegraph.
“Having said that, I think it’s important that India - which has become the centre of world cricket - uses her power responsibly. We don’t want the smaller nations to be trampled over in the search for more revenue,” he said.
Warne also said that teams should play less cricket, which would help groundsmen to prepare better wickets.
“On the field, the big thing I’m looking for is a better balance between bat and ball. No one wants Test matches where 500 plays 450. We all need to play less cricket, and that way the groundsmen will have more time to prepare good sporting wickets that give everyone - bowlers included - a fair go,” he said.
