India finish fourth in women’s world chess
December 28th, 2011 - 5:41 pm ICT by IANSMardin (Turkey), Dec 28 (IANS) India finished fourth after losing their last round against champions China 1.5-2.5 in the 2011 World Women Chess team championship in this southeastern Turkish town.
India were placed fourth, though they tied with Ukraine on 11 points behind Russia (second) and Georgia (third).
In the China-India match, three games ended in draws and Zhao Xue defeated Tania Sachdev on the third board.
“India wanted a quick draw, but our players hoped to fight. Zhao Xue badly wanted to win and she did it,” said China coach Yu Shaoteng.
Zhao Xue said: “I lost a game Monday and I really wanted to win Tuesday.”
In other matches, Russia made a quick draw with Armenia for a podium finish, Vietnam also drew with Ukraine, Greece beat South Africa and Georgia ousted Turkey.
Final standings:
1. China (16 points), 2. Russia (13), 3. Georgia (12), 4-5. India and Ukraine (11), 6-7. Armenia and Vietnam (9 points), 8. Greece (5), 9. Turkey (4); 10. South Africa (0).
