India draw with Australia in U-21 women’s hockey

New Delhi, Nov 9 (IANS) India and Australia played out a goalless draw in the four-nation under-21 women’s hockey tournament here Wednesday.

India, who pipped New Zeland 3-2 in the opening match, came close to scoring on a number of ocassions but could not make the most of the opportunities.

Australia were resolute in defence and kept the dominating home team at bay.

Both India and Australia got five penalty corners each and all were wasted. India tried out variations in their penalty corners, but it was not effective.

The home team missed a good scoring chance when Navneet Kaur had only the goalkeeper to beat in the 54th minute, but Jocelyn Bartram saved the shot.

In another match, New Zealand, riding on Sian Fremaux brilliant performance, beat Germany 6-2.

Fremaux slammed three goals (10th, 14th, 47th minutes) while Pippa Hayward (8th min),
Rhiannon Dennison (15th min), and Tara Hall (64th) scored one each.

Marilena Kraub (4th,35th) pulled back two goals for Germany.

India leads the table with four points followed by New Zealand (3), Germany (3) and Australia (1).
