Chennai, Sep 24 (IANS) India A warmed up for the final with a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Australia A in the last league match of the tri-series cricket here Wednesday. Both teams have already qualified for the final that is scheduled Friday.
After winning the toss, Australia piled up 272 for six in their allotted 50 overs. India crossed the target with 24 deliveries to spare to notch their second win against the Aussies and top the league table.
Suresh Raina (46) and Rohit Sharma (51) gave momentum to the Indian chase with their 85-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Thereafter, Yusuf Pathan chipped in with a useful 36 before Wriddhiman Saha (25 not out) and Piyush Chawla (25 not out) finished the game in a flurry of strokes.
Along the way, there were a few hiccups for the Indians who otherwise looked the better team on a pitch that drew teeth from the bowlers.
The Aussies, aided by a 96-run second wicket stand between Marcus North (40) and David Hussey put up a fighting target.
Hussey yet again was the mainstay of the Australian innings that despite the early promise fell short by a good 20 runs.
Down the order, skipper Cameron White (30) and George Bailey (36) chipped in with useful scores while Phillip Hughes (49 not out) and Ashley Noffke (33 not out) rattled up 57 for the unbroken seventh wicket off just 46 balls.
Fast bowler Irfan Pathan suffered the most, his 10 overs cost him 66 runs without success, while leggie Chwala went for 62 and bagged the wickets of North and Ronchi. Praveen Kumar was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 2 for 43.
