India A 94/3 at lunch against New Zealand ASeptember 28th, 2008 - 3:12 pm ICT by IANS
Chennai, Sep 28 (IANS) India A battled their way to 94 for three at lunch against New Zealand A on the first day of the four-day Test match at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, here Sunday. The only redeeming feature of India’s performance in the first session was a solid 45 by No.3 Murali Vijay who looked quite assured until he edged off-spinner Nathan McCullum to the lone slip Aaron Redmond.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Indians were off to a shaky start, losing opener Sahil Kukreja in the fifth over, trapped leg before by new ball bowler Michael Mason before Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan added 71 runs for the second wicket to steady the innings.
Vijay, who opens for Tamil Nadu, looked in good touch and played some pleasing strokes to score at a brisk pace. He seemed set for a big score until his dismissal.
However, McCullum struck twice, first dismissing Vijay and then having Dhawan, attempting an ambitious lofted shot, caught at mid-off by Trent Boult for 27.
At lunch, skipper Suresh Raina (3 batting) and Jaydev Shah (5 batting) were at the crease.
