Lahore, June 26 (ANI): In an apparent bid to encash on their ICC World Twenty20 triumph, certain Pakistan cricketers may ask their respective franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to hike their fees from the next season, The Daily Times reports.

Following Pakistan’s emphatic win in the ICC World Twenty20 Championship, the IPL has said that the Pakistani players would be welcome to play in the league’s next season provided that the governments of both countries allow them to do so.

The IPL’s softened stance has probably made the players gamble and ask for more, as they are now unwilling to continue with their old contracts of 100,000 dollars each.

Sources privy to the sports management company which represents players like Kamran Akmal, Umar Gul, Misbahul Haq, and Sohail Tanvir said that the players have made up their minds to ask for a hike in the match fees from their respective franchises.

“These players are now iconic figures after winning the T20 World Cup and it makes no sense that they should settle for old terms when other players are being paid in millions,” an official of the management company said.

He said that after winning the coveted title, Pakistan players believe their value has skyrocketed, and thus it is unlikely that they would continue playing in the IPL on terms contained in their old contracts.

Earlier, the IPL chairman, Lalit Modi had made it clear that the league has ‘no problem’ letting Pakistani players play in the next edition in March 2010.

Modi, however, noted that it is for the governments of the two countries to decide on letting the players play.

While the IPL franchises had signed 11 Pakistani players in the league’s first season, contracts of only four players were retained in the second season. (ANI)
