ICL offers Rs.123 million as prize moneyMarch 8th, 2008 - 7:40 pm ICT by admin
Chandigarh, March 8 (IANS) The Indian Cricket League (ICL) is offering a whopping $3.08 million (Rs.123 million) prize money in the second Twenty20 tournament starting Sunday. The winning team will take away Rs.2.5 crore (Rs.25 million) while second and third ranked teams will pocket Rs.1.25 crore (Rs.12.5 million) and Rs.50 lakh (Rs.5 million) respectively.
Besides this, each win in the league stage will fetch a team Rs.2.5 million.
A total of Rs.70 million has been kept for the league games alone.
Each man-of-the-match will collect Rs.200,000 and the man-of-the-series will be awarded Rs.4 million.
“It is a fulfilling experience to see the ICL make rapid strides in terms of growing bigger and better in only its first year of operations,” ICL executive board member and former England captain Tony Greig said.
“Multiple venues, additional teams, improved player base and to top it all an impressive prize money should make the tournament enthralling for the players and cricket fans,” he said.
Former Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More, who is also an ICL executive member, said more teams from outside India will be added in future tournaments.
This is the second major tournament being hosted by ICL after its T20 Indian championship played here in November last year. Six teams had participated in the inaugural championship. Two more teams have been added this time. The two new teams are Lahore Badshahs and Ahmedabad Rockets.
“We will have teams from cities like London, Karachi and Colombo taking part,” More said.
The ‘Edelweiss 20s challenge’ tournament will be played for 30 days between March 9 and April 7 at three locations - Panchkula on the outskirts of Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Gurgaon on the outskirts of New Delhi.
New Zealand speedster Shane Bond is expected to join the Delhi Giants team here Saturday. Australian paceman Jason Gillespie and batsman Damien Martin are already here.
All 34 matches will be shown live on Ten Sports and Zee Sports.
