ICC to reconsider its decision to cut teams from 2015 World Cup

Sydney, Apr 20 (ANI): ICC President Sharad Pawar has decided to request the executive board to revisit its decision to cut teams from the 2015 cricket world cup during the International Cricket Council’s annual conference in Hong Kong in June.

At a recent board meeting in Mumbai on April 4, the board decided to allow only cricket’s 10 full member nations to participate in the 2015 and 2019 tournaments.

There has been opposition to this proposed new structure, as it would stop minnow countries like Ireland, Canada and Kenya from competing, The Sydney Morning herald reports.

As part of the restructuring of world cricket, a Test play-off for the top four teams was introduced as well as the expansion of the World Twenty20 to 16 teams.

The board had also agreed in Mumbai that the 10 teams for the 2019 world cup in England would be determined on the basis of qualification.

“I have given this matter further serious thought and will request the board to consider this topic once more,” said Pawar.

“I can understand the views of the Associates and Affiliates and ICC will seek to deal with this issue in the best way possible,” he added. (ANI)
